To culminate my Digital Media Studies degree, I led a small group that researched, designed, and launched an augmented reality app for use in a museum setting with Android smartphones. We partnered with Rochester’s fine arts museum, the Memorial Art Gallery, to prove our app could work in the real world with their broad collection. We met at various points throughout the year with the Director of Academic Programs to get the museum’s feedback and make sure their goals were represented in the final product.
Over the course of the year we built a fully-functioning app from the initial idea I had via four interrelated stages:
+ Conception
In this stage I helped us define the main goal of our app: to have museum patrons engage directly with works of art by voicing their opinions. My background in art history made us aware that the value of the art is in the hands of the viewer and that everyone’s opinions are equally valid.
+ Needfinding
During this stage I designed a survey that we released to the general public to gain insight into patron experiences at museums. This helped us understand what potential users would want from our app and where it could fit into and improve on what museums already offer.
+ Prototyping
My main contribution during this stage was to generate a wireframe prototype by implementing broad aesthetic choices we had made. We then tested it with members of our target audience to find out what was enjoyed, what needed tweaking, and what needed to be taken out.
+ Marketing
I contributed to the Marketing stage by designing the app’s product icon—following the Android materials icon style guideline—and web logo.
