Rochester Iconic Views

Rochester Iconic Views

In order to complete my degree in Visual Culture, I created, installed, and advertised an exhibition of my work after a semester of preparation. The show’s focus was the city of Rochester, my home for four years and a subject that every audience member would have a different experience with. I further fleshed out my understanding of the city’s history through research with the University of Rochester’s Kodak Historical Collection. To publicize the show and its opening reception, I designed print and digital images that were distributed through the art department’s existing advertising network and Facebook.

Statement

When we speak of Rochester today, it is often as a site of potential during the area’s burgeoning economic recovery. Yet it is impossible to imagine the city’s future without calling up its storied past. This is exemplified by the mixed-use redevelopment of many former industrial parks and office buildings around the city. Spaces like these, where history is layered upon itself, are just one indicator of all that Rochester signifies. It is only through repeated encounters with it that we begin to understand that the name we inherently associate with the city represents some place different every time it is mentioned.
The images here resemble Rochester in just some of its many facets.
